Hollywood Director Roland Emmerich Leads Production of “Space Nation” TV Series
Renowned Hollywood director Roland Emmerich, known for his works such as “Independence Day,” “2012,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and the 1998 version of “Godzilla,” is teaming up with producer Marco Weber to develop a live-action TV series based on the blockchain game “Space Nation.” This news has garnered widespread attention in the industry as it marks the first time a blockchain game is being adapted into a live-action series.
Emmerich and Weber plan to explore the history, backstory, and setting of “Space Nation” through the TV series. However, instead of opting for traditional television networks or streaming platforms for distribution, they are pursuing a non-traditional distribution method. Weber stated in an interview with Variety, “We want to take an approach that aligns with our game’s overall philosophy. Our goal is to fund a significant portion of the TV series’ budget through our own economic system and tokens.”
“Space Nation”: A New Attempt in Blockchain Gaming
“Space Nation” is a large-scale multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) where players assume the role of a starship captain. In this game, the application of blockchain technology allows players to participate in a token-based economy and engage in the buying, selling, and trading of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) within the game. The game is developed by Space Nation Inc., a company founded by Emmerich, Weber, former Blizzard Entertainment senior project manager Jerome Wu, and game developer Tony Tang.
The project received $50 million in funding early on and was envisioned as a “transmedia” platform from the start. Currently, the team has produced animated shorts featuring the game character “Zoey” as the protagonist, and the game has undergone a “soft launch” test on the PC platform. With its influence in Hollywood and the gaming industry, as well as substantial funding and an ambitious roadmap, “Space Nation” has become a highly anticipated player in the blockchain gaming industry.
Cross-Media Development: From Game to TV Series
The cross-media development of “Space Nation” goes beyond the game itself. Emmerich and Weber have also collaborated with director Martin Weisz to produce a series of animated shorts featuring the character “Zoey” in humorous stories of her quest for fame in space. These shorts, with Emmerich and Weber as executive producers and Weisz as creative director, add depth to the universe of “Space Nation.” The development of the live-action TV series is seen as an extension of this transmedia strategy.
Emmerich stated, “Working with Marco and the game development team to expand this brand-new sci-fi universe has been a unique creative experience. I’m excited to continue exploring the possibilities of cross-media storytelling.”
Weber added, “We are at an important stage where fans are starting to experience the expansion of our IP with the launch of ‘Space Nation Online.’ It’s a satisfying process to explore how different entertainment mediums merge to build a larger universe.”
