In the past two years, various generative AI consumer applications have emerged rapidly, but what is perhaps more important is which services can truly gain user favor.
The well-known venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (hereinafter referred to as a16z) recently released its report on the top 100 generative AI applications. Apart from the champion ChatGPT, which other applications made the list?
a16z claims that they reevaluate AI application trends every six months, ranking the top 50 AI-first web services and the top 50 AI-first mobile apps based on visitor traffic, active user numbers, and other information, totaling 100 applications. They have recently published the third edition of their top 100 list.

Perplexity, which was named by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang as one of the most frequently used AI tools, secured third place in this list. Perplexity is an AI search service that allows users to interact with a chatbot to search for various information. Despite previous controversies over copyright issues with media, its usage continues to rise, and it slightly outperformed ChatGPT in terms of time spent (over 7 minutes), making its debut on the mobile app list.
Claude, launched by Anthropic, is also gaining momentum, rising from 10th place to 4th place in this ranking. Reviewing the progress over the past six months, Anthropic has introduced a smarter Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, adding an Artifacts feature for deeper interactions.
30% of the qualifying applications come from new companies, with ByteDance’s five AI services making their debut on the list
a16z points out that compared to the list from six months ago, 30% of the applications featured in this edition come from new companies, highlighting the intense competition. The chatbot Luzia made its first appearance on the list, ranking 25th among mobile apps. Luzia claims to have 45 million users and was originally a chatbot on WhatsApp, launching its mobile app version last December.
After entering the AI field last year, ByteDance has multiple products making the list.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, which invested in generative AI research and development in 2023, has several services making their debut on both lists, including the AI educational assistant Gauth (44th), the chatbot building tool Coze (45th), and the chatbot Doubao (47th), all of which are featured in the web services list. Doubao also ranked 26th on the mobile app list, alongside the image editor Hypic (19th) and the AI assistant CiCi (34th).
Image and video editing generation still dominate, with various creation tools accounting for over 50%
When looking at the types of applications, creative tools are the most widely used AI application category, with 52% of companies on the web services list focusing on various types of generation or editing tools, such as images, videos, and music, with images being the most prevalent.
For newly listed companies, this proportion is even higher, with 58% falling into the creative tools category, such as Luma (14th), which can generate realistic 3D images, AI animation tool Viggle (21st), and AI painting generator SeaArt.
The situation is similar on the mobile app list, with as many as 22% of the listed companies being image or video editing tools. This area is still dominated by established companies such as Meitu (9th), South Korea’s Naver’s Snow (30th), and Adobe Express (35th).
However, a16z claims that this list features a new category of AI applications: “Aesthetics and Dating.” LooksMax AI (43rd) and Umax (44th) are two apps that use AI technology to provide users with suggestions on how to improve their appearance and enhance their personal image; RIZZ (49th) is a chat assistant app that can analyze social media screenshots to customize responses and help users have enjoyable conversations.
