Will Taiwan Mobile Enter the Cryptocurrency Industry?
On July 5th, the Financial Supervisory Commission released a list of “Virtual Currency Platform Operators who have Completed Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Statements.” The 26th on the list is “Rich Crown Digital Co., Ltd.,” with Taiwan Telecom’s Taiwan Mobile General Manager, Lin Zhi Chen, as the person in charge. Lin Zhi Chen also serves as the Chairman and Partner at AppWorks’ Alpha Accelerator.
Not only that, the directors and supervisors of Rich Crown Digital Co., Ltd. are also key figures in Taiwan Mobile. Director Han Kunju is the Deputy General Manager for New Technology Business Development at Taiwan Mobile and was involved in creating the Pi Wallet at PChome. Supervisor Cai Qiyan is the Group Chief Information Officer.
According to the trademark information of Rich Crown Digital Co., Ltd., they currently have OP Crypto Asset Wallet, OPCrypto, and OPCryptoex. Although the names are directly related to the “cryptocurrency industry,” it is not certain if they are directly related to trading.
Taiwan Mobile’s General Manager Lin Zhi Chen is open to the Web3 industry, not only supporting many related startups through AppWorks’ Alpha Accelerator but also stating in an interview with “WEB3+” that “fiat currency will be significantly replaced in the next 20-30 years.” He explained that the new generation of currency no longer requires government responsibility, representing one of the changes brought to human society by the Web3 wave.
Initially recruiting Han Kunju from PChome, Taiwan Mobile appointed him as the General Manager of Rich Crown Digital, seemingly to further expand the “MoCoin” ecosystem. However, from the latest list approved by the Financial Supervisory Commission, it appears that the situation may not be so straightforward.
Taiwan Mobile’s move is likely to create some waves in Taiwan’s cryptocurrency industry. However, how they engage with the government, how they enable a large telecommunications company to possess the flexibility of the Web3 industry, and even the “speed” of all actions, are believed to be scrutinized by the public.
