Square Enix, the Japanese gaming giant known for the Final Fantasy series, has been actively involved in blockchain technology in recent years. They have not only released their first NFT game, “SYMBIOGENESIS,” but have also revealed investments in 11 Web3-related companies.
In 2024, Square Enix will continue to expand its presence in the blockchain industry. The newly appointed president, Takashi Kitase, mentioned in his New Year’s speech:
“In our new business areas, Square Enix considers blockchain entertainment/Web3, AI, and cloud computing as key investment sectors. However, we have redefined our goals and restructured our organization last year, and we are currently working on maximizing resource allocation.”
Square Enix is also aiming to achieve “diversified revenue” by challenging itself in various industries. Currently, their business group includes publishing houses, film studios, and multiple game studios.
Enhancing Immersion with VR and AR, AI Might Change the Way We Create
In addition to sharing their key investment areas, President Kitase is also focusing on extended reality (XR) and has observed that the construction industry has already adopted this technology. The digital entertainment industry is also utilizing virtual reality (VR) technology to create a more immersive experience.
President Kitase has also noticed the rapid development of generative AI, especially with the popularity of AI chatbot ChatGPT. This technology is now being used in the creation of digital entertainment-related images, videos, and music. He stated, “The way we create things may undergo fundamental changes.”
It is not surprising for gaming giants to show interest in or adopt AI. Previously, it was reported that Blizzard, another gaming giant, planned to introduce AI generative tools internally, allowing employees to automatically generate new characters, artwork, and concept designs by simply inputting text. Taiwanese music gaming company Rayark has also employed an AI communication specialist to generate visuals for their new songs.

According to CoinPost, after months of preparation, Square Enix’s NFT game “SYMBIOGENESIS” officially launched its “game experience” on December 21, 2023.
This game is positioned as a “fantasy adventure” but plays more like a “community puzzle-solving game.” Players can exchange information with each other to progress the story, find hidden items, and even battle against incoming dragons.
