Major Outage Hits Meta’s Three Leading Platforms! Stock Price Drops Over 2%
In a sudden late-night incident, Meta’s three major software platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, experienced a large-scale outage on the evening of the 5th. A significant number of users were forcibly logged out, and their homepages displayed messages such as “unable to load posts” and “connection expired.” The outage lasted for approximately one and a half hours, with service restoration occurring around 12:30 a.m. Meta’s stock price also plummeted by over 2% in an instant.
Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, posted on the social media platform X half an hour after the outage, stating that they were “working on it.”
Subsequently, Stone clarified in another post that the cause of the outage was a “technical issue,” without providing further details: “Earlier today, users experienced difficulties accessing our services due to a technical issue. We have resolved this problem.”
According to data from the outage tracking website “Downdetector,” numerous problem reports flooded in for Meta’s software platforms after 11 p.m., including reports from users in Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and other locations. More than 300,000 reports were received for Facebook, and over 47,000 reports were received for Instagram.
Facebook and Instagram had similar incidents in May and June of last year, causing disruptions for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and affecting an estimated 200,000 users. Meta apologized afterward, attributing the issues to “technical problems” but without providing specific details on the cause.
