Why is there an impending wave of returns for the newly released Vision Pro?
Apple’s Vision Pro was finally released in early February, and Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of rival company Meta, has expressed his belief that the price is too high. He even boldly compared it to his own product, Quest, claiming that it is a better product and more affordable. It seems that Zuckerberg is not the only one who thinks that Vision Pro is not worth it, as there are reports of a wave of returns on social media platforms. So, what exactly is the problem with this MR headset that costs $3,500?
After personally experiencing Vision Pro, Zuckerberg shared his thoughts and reviews in a video on Instagram. This product, which was anticipated by competitors, seems to have put Zuckerberg at ease after trying it himself. He even openly compared it to his own product, stating that Quest is not only more affordable but also a better product.
At the same time, there is a growing wave of returns for Vision Pro on social media platforms. Despite the high demand during the pre-order period, as the deadline for returns approaches for the first batch of users, many people have expressed their intention to return Vision Pro on the internet.
Issue 1: Sacrificing Comfort for Resolution
The most commonly criticized issue with Vision Pro is its lack of comfort when worn. “It’s uncomfortable to wear” is the most frequently mentioned complaint. Parker Ortolani, a product manager at The Verge, personally purchased Vision Pro and commented on Threads, stating that although the performance is as expected, even wearing it for a short period of time is uncomfortable. He mentioned that he would consider buying the next generation if they solve the comfort issues.
The uncomfortable wearing experience is a key factor in many people’s decision to return Vision Pro.

Another user on X also expressed, “Vision Pro may be the most amazing tech product I’ve ever used, but I can’t wait to return it. I can’t handle the headaches that come after using it for just 10 minutes.”
In Zuckerberg’s review video, he mentioned that Apple had made several compromises in terms of device quality, comfort, ergonomics, and other aspects of the screen and components in order to achieve higher resolution. He also compared the wearing experience of Vision Pro to his own Quest, claiming that Quest is 120 grams lighter (Vision Pro weighs about 650 grams) and much more comfortable to wear for longer periods. Additionally, Quest offers a wider field of view and is more convenient for movement, as it does not require a power cord connected to the battery. Furthermore, Quest is priced at only 1/7 of Vision Pro ($500).
Issue 2: Insufficient Work Capability and Limited Entertainment Content
The criticisms of Vision Pro go beyond comfort. From a work and entertainment perspective, the current applications are not convincing enough for users to pay $3,500, which is a major problem. The Verge mentioned that a user complained on Threads that her excitement for Vision Pro has faded, as she feels dizzy when using Figma while wearing the device, making it unsuitable for her work.
Carter Gibson, a senior manager at Google, also commented that it is difficult to perform multiple tasks in various windows on Vision Pro. “Many file types are not supported on Vision Pro, and I don’t think creating slides in Vision Pro is easier than using a keyboard and mouse.”
Furthermore, there are very few games available for Vision Pro, and without a compatible controller, it becomes even more challenging for games to support it. Zuckerberg also claimed that Quest offers a more immersive entertainment experience than Vision Pro.
“If I don’t plan to use it to improve work efficiency, if I don’t like using it for entertainment, and if there aren’t many games available on it – I can’t think of a reason to keep this device.” A user who used Vision Pro commented on Reddit.
Vision Pro’s Advantages: Eye Tracking Technology and Increasing Number of Dedicated Apps
Despite the flaws mentioned by Zuckerberg and other users, many people also praise the technology embedded in Vision Pro, particularly its eye tracking feature. Zuckerberg admitted that Vision Pro excels in this aspect and emphasized that this technology will also be incorporated into Meta’s future products.
Additionally, although there were initially few apps tailored for Vision Pro, the number has been rapidly growing. In January, Apple announced around 150 dedicated apps, and by the time of the official release, it had grown to 600. In just two weeks, it further increased to around 1,000, indicating that developers are accelerating their efforts on this emerging platform.
Zuckerberg hopes that their open approach will prevail in the competition of the next generation computing platform and defeat Apple’s closed approach.

Zuckerberg said, “I know that whenever someone questions whether Apple can be a leader in a new field, Apple fans get upset. But the reality is that there is always a battle between open and closed approaches in every generation of computing platforms. In the era of personal computers, Microsoft’s open approach was the winner, and in the next generation, Meta will be an open approach. I want to make sure that the open approach stands out, but the future is still uncertain.”
